Davis Muxlow, CEO of HVAKR, spoke at the 4/30/2026 club meeting and shared insight into the future of software and Artificial Intelligence specifically within the HVAC industry. He emphasized the growing importance of soft skills in engineering, particularly the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively.
Muxlow noted that as technology continues to advance, technical skills among engineers may become more standardized, increasing the value of interpersonal and business related skills. He also highlighted the importance of obtaining a Professional Engineer (PE) license, explaining that it can help alleviate bottlenecks in the design process.
Additionally, he predicted that continued growth in software development will lead to an increase in smaller engineering firms, rather than a few large firms dominating the industry. As a result, engineers will need not only strong fundamentals but also specialized skills to remain competitive.
He concluded his presentation with four pieces of advice:

  1. Get your PE as soon as possible.
  2. Focus on you soft skills – learn the business and relational side of the industry (sales, finance, marketing, communication).
  3. Get exposure to all aspects of the business, be proactively curious.
  4. Work hard, the extra hours are worth it.
