Cameron Curtis, Senior Team Lead for ACCO, spoke at the 4/16/2026 club meeting and shared insights into careers in the HVAC industry and their journey from a mechanical engineering student to an industry professional. He emphasized that their career path was not linear, but shaped by exploring different roles and being open to new opportunities, ultimately leading to meaningful growth within the industry.
Curtis also introduced ACCO, a 90+ year company with strong ties to Cal Poly—often described as “built by Cal Poly” due to the impact of its alumni. He provided an overview of common career paths in HVAC, including consulting engineering, contractor engineering, technical sales, and project management, noting that each offers a different work style and encouraging students to find the best fit for their interests and strengths.
Overall, the key takeaway was that the HVAC industry offers diverse opportunities, and success comes from hard work, consistency, self-advocacy, and a willingness to embrace new challenges.
